interzum 2027 runs 11-14 May at Koelnmesse, organised by Koelnmesse GmbH. It is the world's leading fair for furniture production and interior construction — and it is a materials fair, which changes the stand brief more than most exhibitors expect.

Buyers come to touch things

At a finished-product fair, the visitor looks. At interzum, the visitor touches: edge banding, surface texture, hinge action, panel core, fabric hand, veneer grain. They run a thumbnail across a surface to judge scratch resistance. They open and close a drawer runner forty times.

This makes the sample presentation the primary design object, not the graphic wall. A well-built sample system at interzum is at hand height, reachable from the aisle without entering the stand, lit so surface texture reads rather than flattens, and dense enough that a buyer can compare six finishes without walking. Most stands get this wrong by treating samples as decoration around a hero image, which is exactly backwards for this audience.

Plan for handling, not just display

Samples get picked up, put down, taken away and asked about. That means you need more of them than you think, a place to store the refills that is not behind a locked door, and a way for a buyer to leave with something — a labelled sample, a spec sheet, a QR to the technical data. Stands that run out of samples on day two lose the last two days of the fair.

Turkey is a major exporter of wood-based panels, edge banding, furniture components, hardware and textiles for furniture. interzum is where European furniture manufacturers pick their suppliers for the coming cycle, and it runs biennially in odd years — a two-year gap between chances.

Our honest position on this fair

If your range is small and your sales are already relationship-based, a compact modular stand with an excellent sample wall will outperform a large custom build with a mediocre one. Spend the money on the sample system. And if you are new to interzum, take a smaller stand in the right hall rather than a bigger stand in the wrong one — adjacency to your buyer's other suppliers matters more here than square metres.
